Yes, and the friction was inevitable. When you help conjure a global uprising like Occupy Wall Street, the movement soon acquires a life of its own and any attempt to name progenitors provokes backlash. Some organisers accused me of exaggerating my role; others bristled when I warned, mid-encampment, that protest culture risked devolving into ritual. Leaving Adbusters after a public quarrel over tactics added more sparks. Later, my book The End of Protest angered comrades who felt declaring “protest is broken” bordered on betrayal, while conservative press painted me as a naïve radical for the very same thesis. Even modest experiments such as launching the Activist Graduate School drew suspicion about gate-keeping knowledge.
Controversy, though, is the tax innovators pay. It clarifies intentions, exposes blind spots and keeps the ego in check. If no one challenges your strategy, you probably are not threatening the order.
